BMW is about to launch its first production hydrogen-powered Car into the world, in a joint venture with Toyota, offering an alternative for EVs.
The first step in this project will be launching the iX5 Hydrogen, which is a hydrogen-powered version of the famous X5 SUV. But this model will have a limited production run next year. As preparation for a mass-produced model scheduled for 2025.
The information was disclosed in an interview hosting BMW’s Sales chief Peter Nota. He elaborated more on the matter, predicting that the emerging hydrogen car market would probably takeoff around 2025. BMW will be ready for that with a well-developed production model. And it will most likely be an SUV, first because of the segment’s popularity among the public, and second, Hydrogen cell technology is well suited for the SUV body type.
Hydrogen technology offers numerous benefits, giving car makers an alternative to avoid the difficulties faced when producing pure electric cars. For example, hydrogen-powered cars refuel as fast as any of their gas-powered counterparts. And their range and performance remain unhindered by temperature fluctuations.

On the other hand with hydrogen cells, car producers can get rid of several problems related to EV production like the charging infrastructure irregularities, and raw material scarcity.
Those were the arguments given by Peter Nota, justifying why BMW wants to develop multiple renewable technologies simultaneously and avoid putting all its eggs in one basket. “We do believe in the importance of various technologies – battery electric vehicles, also hydrogen and efficient combustion engines,” said Nota.
Nota also talked about their good relations with Toyota, with several ongoing joint development projects between the two carmakers. So it was logical to start the Hydrogen car project with their usual partner. Besides, Toyota has good experience dealing with hydrogen technology, notably with prototypes like the Mirai. These facts make us fairly optimistic about the success of the new projects.
