Mazda doesn’t want to let the rotary engine go, after a few failures, the brand plans on introducing it, but in a new form in its upcoming MX-30 plug-in hybrid crossover around the start of next year.
The interesting news is that the new powertrain will be commercialized in the US even though Mazda offers the MX-30 in the US as an all-electric vehicle exclusively. Mazda’s official statement elaborated on the subject saying “While we cannot comment on future products or products in other markets, we can confirm the MX-30 PHEV is coming to the US. market,”
The trick is that the new rotary engine won’t be powering the wheels directly, but instead, it will recharge the batteries which will in turn power the motors responsible for the car’s motion. This setup effectively preserves the all-electric nature of the car, excluding gas-powered engines from the main powertrain. While at the same time extending the car’s range. A great addition to the MX-30, a car that has long suffered from a very limited range, an issue that has crippled it and prevented it from competing with other EVs present on the US market. With only a meager 100 miles on a single charge currently. The introduction of the range extender rotary engine may hopefully save the car and raise its sales to more acceptable levels.
