It’s official now, The European Commission has decided to maintain the proposed ban on the production of new passenger ICEs starting from 2035.
The decision stems from growing ecological and environmental concerns. It’s true that the great majority of the European population agrees on the severity of those issues, but some critics, especially car manufacturers have deemed the plan too ambitious and impossible to achieve. Saying that the hasty transition will be unnecessarily costly and will have a lot of negative impacts on the industry. The European Commission intends to keep the matter under discussion until later this year before taking a final decision.
Meanwhile, two major carmakers have stood out from the crowds by fully supporting the transition plan, the first was Volkswagen, the German car maker expressed its opinion by saying that the shift toward electric mobility is “irreversible.” And that “it is the only ecologically, technologically and economically sensible way to replace combustion engines as quickly as possible," . However, the company acknowledged that there’s a lot of work to be done before 2035 as it has described the European decarbonization strategy as “ambitious but achievable.”
The second giant to express its opinion is Mercedes, the company was even more enthusiastic about the decision than its compatriot, the automaker said that it is ready to achieve the decarbonization goal long before the designated deadline. "By 2030, we are ready to go fully electric wherever market conditions allow."
But the head of external relations at Mercedes, Eckart von Klaeden has emphasized the role that policymakers should play in this whole process, he said; "The decision puts the onus on policymakers to ensure the necessary infrastructure is in place.”
It’s worth noting that the decision still needs the ratification of all 27 member states, and it looks like major economies in the union still need more convincing terms to be included in the final draft. Perhaps the backing of other major car makers like Ford, Stellantis, and Jaguar – who are generally ready for and in favor of a rapid transition- can constitute an additional boost to the decarbonization plans.
