BMWNew bmw interiors will be made from recycled fishing nets

BMW is going greener by adopting a new process of recycling fishing nets and other plastic wastes into its Neue Klasse platform cars’ interiors.

The idea was first presented in the iVision concept, showing how a car can be 100% made from recycled material. Well, 100% is still far from becoming reality, but the brand started integrating the idea into its production process gradually.

The first step will be making “fully vegan interiors” for both BMW and Mini models, starting in 2023, and a year later, we will start seeing aluminum wheels produced using 100% green energy. This tremendous shift in the production effort will contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

But this is just the start, the big move will happen in 2025; in collaboration with the fishing industry, BMW intends to manufacture the interiors of the new-generation Neue Klasse from recycled fishing nets and ropes at a rate of around 30% of the total raw material used.

Repurposing maritime waste will have several positive effects on the environment and BMW production; the company will significantly reduce its carbon footprint and reliance on petroleum-based raw materials, while the oceans will be a bit cleaner. A win-win situation if you ask me.

But how will BMW do the recycling exactly? Basically, BMW will take used fishing nets, old floor coverings, and other plastic waste, turn them into a synthetic yarn called Econyl, and then use it to create different parts of the cars’ interiors.

BMW has already started experimenting with the process, making floor mats for the new BMW iX electric SUV and the upcoming X1 crossover.

This is not the only way to do it; the German carmaker is also developing another process in collaboration with Danish company Plastix. The new process will turn maritime plastic waste into plastic granules, giving BMW more possibilities to make an increasing number of their car parts from recycled materials.

This revolutionary idea is just one aspect of the new-generation Neue Klasse cars. Other aspects will surely be revealed in the upcoming International Motor Show (IAA) in Germany.

The quality of the material used in the production process makes the difference between a good product and a bad one. That’s why Coverking takes great care when choosing the best materials for its products. Coverking covers are made from custom-made high-quality multi-layered fabric, capable of resisting all kinds of weather conditions, dust, spills, and even small accidents.

Scratches are a thing of the past with Coverking, a custom-made cover from us will make sure that your car is completely isolated from its environment, and kept safe for the next trip!
