Chinese EV brand Nio is making its way into the UK market. As of next year, Nio will start selling the new ET5 and building battery swap stations as well.

Nio is aiming at competing with more established EV makers all over Europe, armed with its new business model and technology. The brand made some remarkable achievements in China, and it’s now trying to transfer that to the old continent.

Nio CEO William Li gave a hint at the company’s strategy in the UK, saying that smaller models like the ET5 will be suitable for the UK, but he preferred to leave the name of the second model secret.

Besides the ET5, Nio has another winning card up its sleeves; the carmaker wants to introduce its battery swap stations to the UK, allowing EV owners to change their batteries in less than 5 minutes, effectively eliminating the waiting time associated with charging EV batteries. This would constitute a major selling point for the Chinese carmaker in a highly competitive market.

However, Nio needs to create a substantial network of battery-swapping stations to create the desired effect on the market, and that requires a huge investment from the company.

Another major project is the Nio House plus-sized showroom, the brand has already selected a suitable site in London; the establishment will be built in the same fashion as its counterparts in China, Norway, and Germany, and it will serve as a showcase for all Nio models and a general hang-out space as well.

Li also elaborated on the battery swap technology, he said that Nio is currently negotiating multiple deals with major carmakers to use the technology in their future electric models; some of these negotiations have already reached advanced stages where Nio built prototypes for some carmakers.

Other than the rapid charging, the battery swap platform will also allow drivers to change between different battery capacities, based on their actual needs; this will create exceptional flexibility in EV manufacturing, charging, and driving.

Back in the UK, Li said that instead of selling the ET5 to customers, it will be exclusively leased; several subscription options will be offered to interested customers, including some very flexible ones that allow customers to return their cars with as little as a month’s notice. This business model has been very successful in China with companies like Geely’s subsidiary Lynk&Co. Now Nio wants to test the concept in some carefully chosen European markets.

We can see how since its launch in 2016, Nio has been on a smooth climb upward, penetrating larger and larger global markets, after China and Norway now the company is getting into Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, and eventually the UK next year.

Among All these new markets, Germany will be the first to receive the ET7 large saloon car, a large SUV model that will be followed by the ET5 next year.

Li proudly stated that all Nio models are equipped with high-tech software and sensors that allow for autonomous driving in certain situations, however, that still needs to be approved by the authorities of every separate country, and there’s still no given timeframe to do that.

Nio hopes that with a successful expansion into Europe it would dramatically increase its sales figures which now sit at a quarter of a million vehicles as of 30 September, with the largest portion of that number sold in China.
