How can a classical 4WD fit into the electric age? how can we preserve these icons of the automotive industry in the rapidly developing world?
Those are the questions that the E.C.D Automotive design are trying their best to solve. the Florida based firm is famous for its impressive custom builds, especially those featuring the old-school off-roader The Land Rover Defender. their latest project is nothing short of original creativity, as they incorporated an electric engine into two land rover defenders. So instead of a huge combustion engine, the defender now runs on a powerful tesla electric engine.
The two cars were named project Britton and project Morpheus, and they are actually fitted with the same running gear in which we find a 100kWh battery pack and a single Tesla electric motor producing 450 horsepower, That can reach 60mph in 5 seconds and guarantees a range of 220 miles.
The team working on this project tried their best to preserve all the power, range and off-road capabilities of the car, so the car is still a four-wheel drive – as it should always remain - with the tires upgraded to an air-ride suspension with BF Goodrich all-terrain tires. "At the end of the day, we’re doing this with deep love of older Defenders and a passion to keep them on the road by modifying them to fit into our client’s lives" said E.C.D. Co-Founder Elliot Humble.
The difference between the two models lays mostly in design details, the “Britton” is coated with a shade of cool khaki, and have an interior covered with black and beige leather coupled with wooden trims. the “Morpheus” however, has a more aggressive style that lacks the soft wooden trims while keeping the leather. it was also equipped with additional seats, roof racks and external lights.
