The Porsche 911 was always a special car, and it had a great number of impressive iterations over the years. The most distinguishable of them is the 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS. This special version of the 911 has impressive features, like the record for the fastest car in Europe at the time with a top speed of 152 mph. But what interests us today is the unique design element, the "Ducktail" spoiler—used for the first time on this particular 911 model, a detail that celebrates today's 50 years of existence.
The ducktail was born as a purely technical solution for a performance issue, but it had the happy side effect of being beautiful.
In 1972, the 2.7 RS was still in development, and Porsche designers were looking for a practical design solution that could push its rear end to the ground and keep it stable at high speeds—not knowing that the “ducktail” solution would become one of the most recognizable design elements in the automotive world.

The 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS was not just a design rarity. It was also a very successful performance car, weighing only 1,075 kg and reaching the 60-mph mark in 5.8 seconds. The Carrera 2.7 RS was subsequently used as a base for other successful racing versions, both on tracks and in rallies.
Porsche initially intended to make 500 units, but high demand and customer pressure forced them to raise 1,580 units.
