Porsche is upping its game in the EV market, and it is taking the same path as other big car makers who want to have solid footing in the future of the car industry.
The German car maker has been rather shy in this new field of operations, but now they appear to be determined to change that by a series of drastic decisions, all of which were announced in their annual meeting.
Until now, Porsche has been relying on third party companies to provide charging services for its fleet of plug-in Hybrids, the EV charging provider Ionity took charge of the whole operation until now. Starting from later this year, Porsche will supplement Ionity network by its own charging facilities, exclusively made for Porsche owners.
The initial concept suggest that they will be scattered along the main traffic lanes in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. Not only as charging hubs but also as luxury lounges, where Porsche owners will have the opportunity to relax while their cars charge. The network will be later be expended to China and the US according to the same announcement.
The new project is a part of Porsche’s overall strategy of boosting its EVs sales, in the hope of reaching 80% of all sales by 2030.
The EV charging network wasn’t the only project announced during the annual conference, Porsche is also developing an electric Mycan and a new sports car, the 718 EV, the new sports car will be exclusively electric and taking inspiration from the Mission R. Now the Mycan is expected to be ready soon, while the 718 won’t be fully developed before 2025.
