Porsche has unveiled what it claims to be one of the world's high-performance matrix headlights, featuring 65,536 micro-LEDs.

Light technology has evolved dramatically in the past few years. The most significant advances were made in the realm of lighting intensity and illumination uniformity. But there is another type of lighting technology that is becoming much more popular as well – LED. The new matrix headlights are much more than just an aesthetic change. They use 65,536 tiny LEDs instead of the old 84 pixels, which is said to make them brighter and safer.

Nichia, headlamp company Hella/Forvia, and semiconductor company Infineon worked together to develop these new micro-LEDs, which they claim are as bright as xenon headlamps without being blinding or overpowering. This teamwork has enabled significant improvements in building quality LEDs while also improving the performance of new lighting systems.

"At 300 lx, it is possible to project the high beam up to [1,969 feet]. But it is not only about a certain range. You need good light distribution within the whole field, too. We achieved this with four light sources. The brightness of the centre and side areas can be continuously adjusted for added roadside illumination. Greater illumination leads to better lighting performance." A Porsche engineer clarified.

The design is based on the latest technologies to ensure better illumination and increased safety. The headlights can be adjusted to the right brightness level right from the driver's seat with a simple push of a button. In fact, there are 1,024 lumen steps between the lowest and highest outputs, with a lower beam of 160 lx of illumination and a higher beam of  300 lx of illumination. They have a wide-angle headlight pattern that helps you see as much as possible in front of your vehicle and behind it.

With a personality that mimics a traditional high beam and modern technology that provides higher visibility at night time, Porsche's new matrix headlights are said to be brighter and safer. The new headlights are expected to be available for the facelifted 2023 Porsche Cayenne.
