Revolutionary Electric Vehicle Batteries Begin Pilot Production for Ford, BMW

Revolutionary energy storage technology is set to grace the next generation of vehicles.

The battery revolution may be coming sooner than all these industry heavyweights think. A company that is working to develop electric vehicle batteries says it has begun pilot production, with plans to expand to a major automaker by the end of the year.

Solid Power is one step closer to bringing solid-state battery technology to market. The company announced the completion of its “EV cell pilot line” which will manufacture the type of battery needed for electric vehicles.

Solid-state batteries use a solid electrolyte, separate electrodes, and a metallic current collector that can be made of various materials including silicon.

In addition to being lighter than lithium-ion batteries and having longer cycle life, solid-state batteries have the ability to be mounted in a thin film rather than being packed into cylindrical cells. This makes them well-suited for applications in which external connections such as cables or wires are not practical. They would allow for longer driving ranges, faster charging times, and reduced fire risks.

The company announced it had completed initial pilot production at the facility. The pilot line up to full-scale production, and the internal testing will take place in the next months. If the facility was fully operational, the line could produce up to 300 cells per week, or about 15,000 cells per year.

The future looks promising for solid-state batteries and their potential to set the standard for electric vehicles. In the coming years, there will likely be more development in this area as vehicle manufacturers strive to make electric vehicles more affordable.
