Rimac Nevera reached 258 miles per hour in a recent speed test, securing its place as the fastest production (EV) electric car in the world.
Since day one, speed and comfort have been the ultimate goals of the car industry, and now we’re reaching unprecedented speed figures. The most recent achievement is that of the Rimac Nevera, a car that was revealed in 2018 at the Geneva Motor Show with the clear goal of destroying a lot of speed records.
The speed test took place at the Automotive Testing Papenburg track in Germany, which has a four-kilometer straightaway, ideal grounds for record-breaking. Miro Zrnčević, Rimac’s Chief Test and Development Driver, took the wheel and pushed down the gas pedal relentlessly until the car reached a top speed of 258 miles per hour or 412 kilometers per hour. Later on, he described the experience as “driving at one-third of the speed of sound”. To put that in perspective, the sprint was like crossing one football field each second.
The special top speed mode helped the car achieve the new record. This special mode consists of a unique aerodynamic configuration that creates a very delicate mix of drag and downforce. And to make the ideal contact with the track, Rimac procured a set of Michelin Cup 2R tires, which are labeled as “road legal”, a crucial detail that ensures the legitimacy of the new speed record. To push the car forward, electric motors make a mind-blowing 1,914 horsepower, enough to take the Nevera from 0 to 60 in 1.85 seconds.
Production is currently taking place at the Rimac manufacturing facility in Croatia, interested speed maniacs will have to pay $2.1 million to get their hands on a new Nevera. But to their disappointment, the production cars are limited to 218 miles per hour. 40 miles less than the actual top speed, but that’s still a mind-boggling speed nonetheless.
Rimac also promised to offer drive tests during upcoming special events, where customers will have the chance to experience the full potential of the car in a safe and controlled environment.
