R1T RivianRivian-r1t truck owner launches boat like the boss of bear lake

R1T Rivian is known for being the first all-electric production pickup, but the truck has more impressive capabilities, as demonstrated in this video.

Since its launch, we’ve seen countless test-drive putting the R1T Rivian in some really challenging driving situations. But after enough tests, we can safely say that going through mud, sand, and rocks is too easy for the R1T.

With this recent video, however, it seems like the truck has just added deep water to its list. The incident was filmed in Bear Lake, Idaho, where a Rivian owner had the crazy idea of launching his boat into the water using his R1T. The truck didn’t disappoint its driver and passed the test with flying colors.

The driver is also the owner of a YouTube channel Rivvit, he explained that what he did wasn’t some sort of an experiment or a challenge as some may imagine, but he did it out of necessity and a little bit of curiosity as well. “Once I knew the R1T maximum water fording height was over 43 inches, I was instantly curious whether I could launch my boat in Bear Lake Idaho,”  he said.

The reason that pushed the truck owner to do such a risky stunt was that the boat-launching spots around the lake were very limited, so on busy days like this one, the line may extend for hours. The same thing happens if the weather turns for the worse; a boat owner may wait for several hours before docking.

That’s why a lot of boat owners use their own vehicles to launch and retrieve their vessels, but the crucial difference is that they exclusively use modified high vehicles, or even tractors, not just a pickup truck like the R1T Rivian.

The boat we see in the video is a 2004 Malibu 23 LSV weighing around 4,000 pounds; add that to the trailer’s 1,500 pounds. So our brave Rivian was dashing into the water while pulling 5 500 pounds behind it! And according to the owner, they did it three or four times that day.

Of course, it was a calculated risk, and some safety precautions had to be made. The driver used “Off-Road Deep Sand” driving mode and chose a spot where the beach was covered in hard sand. The gradual descent helped the truck as well, and if anything went wrong two other R1Ts were ready to help.
