Robot Seamlessly Paints World's First "Art Car"

The robotic company ABB is collaborating with the young prodigy Advait Kolarkar to create robotic made artistically painted cars.

The artist in question is India’s Advait Kolarkar, a young prodigy who started making artworks at the age of 8 months, conquering the hearts and minds of a great number of modern art enthusiasts. Now Advait is starting a new adventure in previously unexplored territory, the car sector.[i]

The first art piece was made as a first attempt, in collaboration with the robotics leader ABB. The painting was applied to the roof of an SUV by a robot without any human intervention. The achievement was made public in a press release from the robotics company.

The robot, named PixelPaint is an award-winning creation from ABB, and it has successfully applied Kolarkar’s unique design with all its details on the car’s roof with no human help. The creation also included some geometric patterns from Illusorr, a digital design collective based in Dubai UAE.

The entire complex job was done in under 30 minutes, thanks to the precise printhead, equipped with 1,000 nozzles.

ABB hopes to bring to light the developments in car robotic technology, and the solutions that it will provide for the top carmakers all over the world. Precision and speed are the main points that every carmaker wants, and this new artistic creation demonstrates just that.

Such complicated paint jobs usually took a lot of labor and time, making them extremely expensive. They required a complicated process of masking and unmasking. Now, the new technology allows carmakers to bypass all that. And still, deliver even better quality with more complicated designs.

ABB emphasizes the sustainability aspect of its new technology; they selected a damaged refurbished Volkswagen SUV for this particular job.

ABB also mentioned that the PixelPaint process reduces waste and emissions thanks to its ability to apply the paint closely, allowing to use 100% of paint with no airborne misting.
