Porsche shared some details about the upcoming 911 Dakar sports car, driving up the hype before its awaited debut in the LA car show.
This may be unknown to most, but the German sports carmaker has a long history in off-road racing, especially in the legendary Paris-Dakar, where a muscular-looking Porsche 911 has even won the 1984 edition. The legendary race now takes place every year in South America instead of the African Sahara desert, and by the looks of it, the new 911 Dakar is ready to make some headlines there.
But before raising some dust on the Argentinean dry lands, the 911 Dakar has undergone serious testing, the company says that the car has made 6000 off-road miles during development and 300.000 in total. Testing rounds were executed under extreme conditions and in some of the most unique locations like Morocco, Dubai, and Sweden. The pictures here show the car driving over gravel, sand, and icy surfaces, and that sounds like a lot of fun!
The exact specs of the engine are still a matter of speculation, but recent reports indicated that these prototypes are, in fact, modified Carrera 4S models, running on a twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat-six and making 443 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard, naturally. But, we’re still excited to know what other performance-enhancing gear the 911 Dakar has.
An especially built off-roader like the 911 we have here can endure extreme road conditions, but a regular car most definitely won’t… unless Coverking intervened.
