HondaSony, Honda Jointly Making EVs for 2026 U.S. Delivery | Industrial Equipment News (ien.com)

Honda and Sony are joining their efforts to build a new, innovative EV that can combine the automotive technology and the entertainment expertise of the two companies.

The two companies have named their new joint venture Sony Honda Mobility Inc. The new company has already drawn up its schedule, promising to launch the first EV in 2025. Deliveries will start in 2026, selecting the United States as its first market, followed by Japan and Europe later in the same year.

Sony and Honda saw in each other the perfect partner to create the ideal combination of automotive technology and imaging, network, sensor, and entertainment expertise. The deal was struck last March in the form of a 50-50 joint venture agreement.

Details about the new EV are still scarce; information like pricing, platform and the kind of battery to be used are all still kept secret. All we have for now is Honda’s announcement saying that production will take place on US soil, in one of its 12 factories already working here. Some reports indicate that the first model will be treated as a probe to test the success level of the new endeavor, so we shouldn’t expect a mass-produced car, but just a special model.

Honda’s philosophy regarding its new collaboration with Sony revolves around the refinement of the driving experience; smooth driving, a good engine, and good fuel efficiency are not enough anymore. Drivers are increasingly demanding cars that can provide an immersive atmosphere full of entertainment and comfort elements, and that’s exactly the role of Sony in this new equation.

It’s obvious that Honda is looking for safe markets to launch its new car, and choosing the US was on the basis that EVs are already popular here, providing a good launching pad for any new EV. Japan and Europe will come at a later date, according to Honda executives.[i]

Sony may seem distant from the automotive industry, and more focused on the entertainment sector; the company owns the PlayStation video-game console and has several movie and music investments. But let’s not forget that Sony made an electric concept car and put it on display at the CES gadget show in Las Vegas back in 2020.

Honda currently seems struggling to keep up with other carmakers in the new EV segment, and the limited number of electric vehicles in its lineup is enough proof of that. The company is now trying to catch up by entering various partnerships that will help it boost its development speed and take its fair share of the EV market. Sony is not the only company working with Honda, LG, and GM are also collaborating with the carmaker to develop different aspects of EV technology.
