Stellantis Outlines Plans to Become a Mobility Tech Company
A major transformation will impact some major American carmakers in the coming years, the likes of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram as well. And that’s because their parent company Stellantis has made the decision to shift course and head on towards a more environment friendly driving experience for their customers. Or as they phrased it; they want to become a “sustainable mobility technology company”. We can see that the company is serious about this, just by looking at their development plans, by 2030, Stellantis and its dependent brands will have at their disposal, four brand new, highly sophisticated EV platforms, allowing them to produce up to 14 new all-electric models. A very ambitious plan we might say. The expected profit is about $22.6 billion, plus $1.1 billion in reduced costs.
The car models that Stellantis is planning to produce are extremely varied, ranging from small cars to commercial vans to rugged SUVs to full-size pickup trucks. They promised that the first of their platforms will be ready by 2024, followed by the rest in 2030.
Stellantis entertained the audience by disclosing some of the technological features that the company is intending to develop in the few coming years, and we have to say that some of those are coming straight out of Sci-fi movies.
Each new EV platform will initially have:
- STLA Brain, a new electrical architecture with artificial intelligence capability.
- STLA Smart Cockpit user experience and connected service technologies.
- STLA AutoDrive Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous driving systems.
The company’s presentation also helped us imagine the impact that their new technologies will have on the driving experience;
Drivers will have the possibility to interact with their cars by voice, touch, small gestures or even just a glance, for example you will be able to choose a parking spot just by looking at it and nodding, and then the car will take care of the rest. Crazy huh?
Connectivity will be a key part of this new generation of Stellantis cars, it will allow for remote WIFI access even without cellular network, on demand autonomous driving, and also facilitating the work of business fleets by EcoDrive management systems and geolocation services. Without mentioning the performance enhancement features that will affect muscle cars like Dodge for example.
Of course, Stellantis would need some help in order to achieve all this, this help will come from Foxconn, the famous iPhone producer, it will be in charge of developing the STLA Smart Cockpit and STLA AutoDrive, the company is also retraining its employees or hiring new ones in order to have a well-trained workforce able to carry out the company’s ambitious plans in an efficient and cost-effective way.
So, if you still want a big V8 from the company you better hurry, they won’t be waiting for long.
The shift toward more sustainable cars is obviously inevitable, every carmaker has realized it by now, and they are racing with time to be ready for it.
Some things however will never change; that coffee spill ruining your seat, the dust gathering on your car’s floor and the sun rays’ constant burning your dashboard, no car can prevent those no matter how sophisticated it is. So how can you avoid all that?
