Stellantis spends 99 million on new engine production
With this investment, the company aims to remain competitive and profitable in the years to come.
Due to higher than expected demand, Stellantis plans to invest in the production of a new engine. The company is investing $99 million at its facilities in Dundee, Michigan; Kokomo, Indiana; and Etobicoke, Ontario.
Stellantis said that $83 million will be used to remodel the Dundee Engine Complex for the final assembly of the new engine. The system includes a 1.6-liter I-4 turbocharged engine and direct fuel injection, allowing it to support hybrid-electric vehicles.
The investment will see the company invest nearly $2 million at the Etobicoke Casting facility to develop and install upgraded tooling and equipment to manufacture the oil pans for the new engine.
The move is part of Stellantis' plan to increase production capacity by 20% over the next two years, with a goal of becoming one of the largest producers of engines in North America.
The company announced that the new engine will be based on one currently manufactured by the automaker in Europe. According to the Stellantis, it created an ultra-high performance engine that "can be used in almost any type of hybrid vehicle," making it a vital piece of technology for every hybrid automaker. The company plans to begin production in 2025.
