New 2022 Subaru Outback

If safety is your main focus when looking for a new car, then the Subaru Outback is a good place to start.

In the constant quest for high performance, comfort, and fuel efficiency, automakers sometimes make small compromises on safety measures. That’s not a big issue most of the time, but the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS)  has to make sure that certain standards are always met, regardless of the type of innovative designs and technologies present in a car.

The recent move toward electrification has put the institute on high alert, trying to update safety standards based on the new realities of the automotive industry.

The IIHS has conducted several studies that have put new models from different segments to the test, the results showed that the new generation electric SUVs pose the biggest danger to pedestrians and that is because of the heavy battery packs they use.

Despite that, there’s no need to worry, the majority of the tested models have passed the test more or less successfully with no recorded failures.

Similar results were recorded in the Sedan segment, the weight issue lowered the safety performance but not to catastrophic levels.

One car, however, and against all odds has checked all the boxes, scoring excellent results on all tests. The Subaru outback. The car is somewhat of an anomaly in its segment, being a high-riding AWD has maybe contributed to this result, compared to its more traditional-looking counterparts.

The takeaway here is that safety in EVs won’t be an issue for long, if the outback could do it, other future models will definitely do it too! Another good example of that is what Mercedes-Benz is doing right now; the German carmaker has decided to change its design strategy, starting with building the EV version first and then building the ICE version on its platform. This may radically change the car design process, especially in the crucial transition years that we’re witnessing now.

Meanwhile, Subaru can lay back and relax, taking advantage of the free advertisement stunt that the IIHS has handed them.
