Tesla Cybertruck is finally entering the production phase after years of delays.

The electric car pioneer, Tesla, had a bumpy road with most of its extremely ambitious projects, several of which are currently on hold or significantly behind schedule. However, a series of good news was recently announced, starting with the official debut of the Tesla Semi truck and now the company is announcing the imminent production start of the long-awaited Cybertruck. The model was announced back in 2019, at that time it was the first-ever full electric truck. But three years were more than enough for the competition to catch up; Rivian, Ford, and Chevy have all launched their own versions of a full-size EV truck. Now, after the long delay, Tesla Cybertruck finds itself obliged to prove itself against the competition.

As part of the company's earnings call this week, Tesla announced that the Cybertruck will be on the production lines by mid-2023. The model has now entered the “tooling phase” which means that all the designs have been finalized, and now it’s time to prepare the designated factory, and equip it with all the necessary tools and materials.

Until now, all the bodies and batteries of the prototypes that we saw in the course of the past three years were made in Fremont. The operations will be transferred to the Gega Texas factory. But supply issues related to the 4680 battery cells previously used during the testing phase may indicate that Tesla will use the older 2170 cells for the production models.

Other changes may be expected, for starters, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the truck will cost more than $40,000, contrary to what he announced during the early development phases. Some of The truck’s features also may not survive production; Musk again hinted that the final product may know some modifications without specifying any details. But at the same time, he assured the public that “Cybertruck will be one hell of a product” and “a damn fine machine.”

If we take a step back, we can understand why Tesla is updating its truck. The long waiting time has brought with it a new market environment with tougher competition. Tesla needs to adapt its product to the current situation and make sure that it’s up for the task ahead; because no one wants to buy an outdated product, after all.
