Nissan is introducing a new feature for its Nissan Leaf all-electric model; the introduction of bi-directional charging will allow Leaf to send excess power back to the grid.
The Nissan Leaf is among a few iconic models that introduced electric mobility into the US market. It has been a while since then, but the Japanese brand is bringing the car back to the front page by introducing a new functional feature that would have immense benefits for fleet operating companies, homeowners, and even power providers.
Using the new Fermata Energy FE-15 charger, Nissan Leaf owners will be able to charge their vehicles and send excess power still stored in their cars to power storage equipment in the connected buildings or to the power grid.
The first beneficiary of bi-directional charging is of course the power providers; sending back some power will reduce the stress on the power grid, especially during periods of high demand. Car owners too will benefit economically from the operation -this is most beneficial for companies with large car fleets-. Nissan is also working out a technical solution to use the recuperated power domestically, powering small houses directly, for example, and naming the energy storage firm dcbel as a potential partner in this regard.
Nissan is not the only carmaker exploring and experimenting in this new field. Ford for example is already working on an experiment in collaboration with Duke Energy; the two partners are studying the performance of five F-150s powering homes with solar power and energy storage, trying to come up with the ideal way to implement vehicle-to-grid charging.
Going full electric may hold numerous perks and benefits for car owners, both economically and ecologically, but one thing that won’t change is your responsibility as a car owner to provide your ride with the proper protective gear.
