Toyota is testing the new safety features, mainly the trailer Pre-Collision System recently introduced to the new Toyota Tundra.

The previous Tundra model was a decent pick-up truck, but it had a lot of room for improvement. Luckily, Toyota realized that and tried to do their best in the current model, in terms of comfort, technology, and a new hybrid powertrain.

Critics and reviewers already had plenty of time to test the Tundra’s mechanics and technological features. But Toyota still wants to prove that the truck still has some tricks up its sleeves, and it did that recently by demonstrating the trailer pre-collision system at the American Center for Mobility.

What happens basically is that the pre-collision system connects to the trailer’s wheels behind the truck - given that they’re compatible with the system-. When the need for an emergency brake arises, the braking system engages both the truck’s and the trailer’s brakes simultaneously. Making the stop easier and smoother, and elevating some of the burdens off the truck’s brakes.

The experiment was done using a trailer carrying a luxurious Sequoia Capstone, so the extra weight was about 6,185 lbs., leaving no doubt that the Trailer pre-collision system can easily handle heavy loads.

You can see on the video that the approach speed was relatively low but Toyota pointed out that the demonstration here is focused on the handling of a heavy trailer. And the pre-collision system performed marvelously there, bringing both truck and trailer to a full stop at a safe distance before the obstacle.

Although it might not be very useful at high speeds, the Trailer Pre-Collision System can prove very effective in low-speed areas, preventing a lot of accidents usually caused by distracted drivers.

Tundra also enjoys more than just a trailer pre-collision system, it also has a Trailer Back Guidance and Straight Path Assist, helping the driver to keep a straight line while reversing, the truck is also equipped with a Blind Spot Monitor that makes sure the trailer has enough space when changing lanes.

A good reliable truck is what you need if you want to lead an active and dynamic life. But sometimes that’s just not enough.
