Uber freight expands autonomous longhaul trucking pilot
Uber Freight and Aurora Innovation joint venture expands their autonomous truck network to a new lane connecting Fort Worth and El Paso.
In a new happy development involving the fruitful collaboration between Uber Freight and Aurora Innovation, the two companies announced that their autonomous truck pilot project is now expanded to a new 600-mile lane, connecting the cities of Fort Worth and El Paso in Texas. This decision clearly wants to benefit from the increased commercial activity before and during the holiday season.
As has been the case for years now, online purchases and subsequent deliveries dominate the holiday shopping season. The new reality exacts tremendous pressure on truck delivery companies, with a volume reaching 1 billion packages in the US alone. This high volume of deliveries combined with the tight schedule requires an efficient and rapid service that can minimize delays and errors while maintaining reasonable prices.
Uber Freight and Aurora Horizon aspire to be the embodiment of such a service. Uber's customers in Texas now can rely on Aurora’s autonomous trucks, where the company now employs its latest generation of machines, based on PACCAR’s Peterbilt 579M.
As an example of Uber freight customers, Veritiv, the customized packaging solutions distributor, benefits from early access to the new automated lane. Now the company packages are transported aboard Aurora’s autonomous trucks from Fort Worth to El Paso where they are delivered to Veritiv’s final recipients. This 600-mile journey only represents the final leg in the long supply chain. The initial stages linking New Mexico and western Texas are still covered by human drivers.
Aurora is analyzing this pilot project thoroughly, trying to gather as much information and experience as possible to serve the company’s big plans for autonomous trucks. The success of this start is crucial for the next stages, where Uber Freight and Aurora hope to extend autonomous truck services to the entirety of North America.
Truckers are perhaps the luckiest drivers; they get to discover the entire country with all its different regions and climates. But the constant travel also exposes their trucks to all kinds of harsh weather, wear & tear, and the occasional accident.
