Uber's Uber expands comfort electric rides

Uber's customers can now specifically order an electric vehicle in their premium Comfort service.

As part of Uber’s expansion plans, the ride-hailing service now offers the possibility to order an electric vehicle like a Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2, and Ford Mustang Mach-E. The new service is labeled Comfort Electric service as an extension to the existing premium Comfort service. The offer is now extended to 24 new US cities in addition to Vancouver in British Columbia, the city with the highest EV sales in North America.

Comfort Electric service was launched back in May and allows customers to specify some extra perks, like extra legroom and other high-end features, for a 20-40 percent premium over a regular ride. The new feature gives the additional option of choosing to call an EV specifically. However we should note that it’s completely different from “Uber green” service that allows both EVs and hybrids.

Uber confessed that its partnership with Hertz was the driving factor behind the expansion plans; the car rental company noticed that more and more drivers prefer to rent Teslas, that’s why it took the decision to purchase 100,000 new Teslas, allocating 50,000 of them exclusively for Uber ride sharing drivers in the US.

And these are the cities where the new service is now available: Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore-Maryland, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Connecticut, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New Jersey, NYC Suburbs, Philadelphia, Portland, Sacramento, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St Louis, Vancouver (Canada) and Washington, DC.

We can see that Uber is already working toward its goal of becoming the first zero-emissions ride-hailing platform in North America. The company has pledged $800 million to achieve that goal before 2025. This strategy is partially pushed by survival instinct; legislations in several states – like California and NY- are pushing hard toward all-electric mobility by 2030.
