Volkswagen ID Buzz first look the icon is back

Volkswagen has finally taken down the veils off its new ID Buzz, the new electric van was on display at SWSW in Austin. Giving the costumers an opportunity to get the first impressions before production and sales.

From a historical point of view, Volkswagen is more than a car, it’s a symbol of a bygone era, nostalgia kept them in high demand even after the German manufacturer ceased its sales in the US after 2002[i]

Now the new ID BUZZ is supposed to revive the passion for the legendary van, the launch of the short wheelbase ID Buzz passenger van is expected for the third quarter this year, while the long wheel wheelbase version will arrive at the US in 2024. the cargo van will be exclusively sold in Europe.

While we still don’t have the official range numbers, we can still predict that it will be close to its siblings the ID.3 and the ID.4 as they ride on the same EV platform, the WV modular Electric drive toolkit MEB platform. This particular set contains an 82-kWh battery

The initial model will be RWD, delivering 201 horse power. But WV has promised that an AWD model will be available later, adding an extra 107 hp to the vehicle’s power. The car's electric system supports DC fast charging where it can go from 5 to 80% in about 30 minutes

The new ID Buzz's design is clearly inspired by the original type 2 microbus, with the two colors paint job, the V shape hood and the large front and back VW emblem, the only missing feature is the round headlights. The unusual thing is the large grill at the front, which a typical feature in ICE cars, not EVs, apparently, it's mostly cosmetic, hiding behind it ADAS sensors and cooling.

Costumers will have a number of choices when it comes to the paintjob, orange, yellow, green, or blue are all available to be coupled with the white top half and roof. The ID Buzz is a bit small for a van, with only 4.71 meters which is about the same length as the Tesla Model 3

The interior holds the same colors as its exterior, being mostly white with some colored accents matching its exterior. While the floor, windshield trim, seat belts and other elements are exclusively black. the Sliding doors and tailgate are fully automated, but their windows cannot be opened, which is a bit disappointed.

Inside the short wheelbase version, we find two rows of seat, while in the long version costumers have the possibility to add an additional row. A number of cool perks come with seats like the massage, heating and ventilation functions for the front seats, and airplane-like folding trays for the second-row seats

Most of the Buzz’s controls and screens come from the previous models the ID.3 and the ID.4, including the 5.3-inch instrument display, 10-inch center touchscreen and the three-spoke steering wheel. Apparently, the ID buzz copied lots of features form its siblings, and that includes also most of the advanced tech features, like the IQ. DRIVE advanced driver assistance (ADAS) and safety package, self-parking, a 360-degree view, LTE connectivity, over-the-air (OTA) updates, WIFI hotspot functionality, wired and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, the Hello ID voice assistant, and ID. Light for visual cues.
