Volvo announced that the new all-electric EX90 will debut on November 9 with an unprecedented set of safety features.
Volvo CEO Jim Rowan took things in hand and announced personally the debut of the new EX90; the electric successor of the XC90. The announcement came in the form of an introduction video, which wasn’t just about the launch date, it also had a lot to do with new safety features implemented for the first time in the Volvo EX90.
Jim Rowan demonstrated how the set of cameras, sensors, lasers, and software will all come together and ensure the safety of the driver and everybody around him. The new safety technology will be standard issue for the EX90 and presumably for future Volvo models as well. “All Volvo EX90s will come with an invisible shield of safety, a unique combination of the latest technology, powered by the understanding of the car's outside environment and the state of the driver inside,” said Rowen.
So basically, as Rowen explained, the safety system on the EX90 will be broken into two parts working seamlessly. The first part is in charge of the car’s surroundings, where an advanced Lidar system along with 16 ultrasonic sensors, eight cameras, and five radars will monitor everything going on around the car, Volvo's in-house software collects and analyses all the data coming from these various sources and then determines and anticipates all potential dangers. Volvo claims that the system is capable of detecting non-reflective items like a tire on the road at 394 feet and pedestrians at 820 feet, all while traveling at 75 mph.
The second part of the system has the driver as its main point of focus. More sensors and cameras are programmed to monitor the driver’s state, performance, and awareness, like checking if his eyes are focused on the road ahead or if he has a good grip on the wheel. The system is trained to warn the driver if it notices a lack of awareness or difficulty concentrating, if the driver is unresponsive after several warnings, the safety apparatus will stop the car entirely and call emergency services.
Volvo ex90 debuts november 9 tech understands driver
Volvo didn’t share a lot about the car’s design, all we have for now are some patent images showing that the new EX90 won’t be too different from previous XC90 models despite being built on a new purpose-built platform. We expect that more info will trickle down in the coming days and weeks before the official debut.
