Volvovolvo pilot to build charging network for medium and heavyduty electric trucks

Volvo enters a new collaboration with Pilot to develop a new high-performance charging network for medium and heavy-duty trucks.

With the rapid development of electric trucks, manufacturing companies are increasingly feeling the impact that the lack of adequate charging infrastructure is having on the development of this segment of transportation.

Pilot Company and Volvo Group decided to take action. A new initial agreement has put the two companies at the start of a new path, at the end of which they will come up with a new efficient charging network dedicated exclusively to battery-electric Class 8 truck brands, a valuable infrastructure solution that will make the development and spread of heavy-duty electric trucks faster and easier.

Shameek Konar, CEO of Pilot Company, thinks that the goal of a completely decarbonized heavy transportation system looks closer now, Volvo’s expertise in electric trucks and Pilot’s nationwide network constitute two crucial factors that guarantee the success of the project.

Indeed, the goals of the Volvo/Pilot collaboration align perfectly with the nationwide push toward a decarbonized future. In fact, it’s even more valuable than other initiatives because it recognizes that medium- and heavy-duty trucks constitute a more significant source of CO2 compared to other types of vehicles, which makes the electrification of this segment a priority for manufacturing companies and authorities as well.

Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America admitted that his company alone cannot achieve much, despite its vast resources and tremendous expertise, that’s why partnerships like this are extremely valuable. He also conveyed the fleet operators' eagerness to adopt electric technology once the infrastructure is ready to support their operations.

The initial plans include constructing charging facilities, attached to strategically positioned Pilot and Flying J travel centers. The locations will be chosen based on the current and projected electric truck traffic intensity and the willingness of local authorities to support related infrastructure projects. To further facilitate this project, Pilot has already launched its $1 billion “New Horizons” initiative that aims to modernize its travel centers and accommodate the current and future needs of road travelers.
