Volvo's New Alert System Ensures Nobody Is Left in the Car

Volvo is working on a new alert system that monitors the car’s interior, making sure that children and pets are never locked inside.

We have all heard about numerous tragic accidents where kids die in hot cars, health authorities and carmakers always suggest several precautionary measures that drivers can take to avoid such terrible tragedies, but the very nature of today’s busy fast-paced daily life requires more radical solutions, something like Volvo’s new safety system.

Volvo’s creative idea is to monitor the car’s interior using multiple sensors that are capable of detecting the slightest movement inside the cabin or the trunk, the presence of a sleeping toddler, pet, or any other life sign will trigger the system to launch an alarm directed to the driver, alerting him before he locks the car.

The sensors are placed in strategic locations where they can monitor the entirety of the cabin and the trunk, according to Volvo they will be placed in the overhead console, reading lamps on the roof, and in the trunk. Other than the sensors, Volvo also wants to optimize the alarm part as well, launching it only when the driver is about to lock the car, the reason behind this is that continuous warnings create what engineers call “reminder fatigue.” (Think about the seatbelt reminder in older cars).

In case the driver doesn’t respond, the system won’t lock the doors and will keep the climate controls running, which is a crucial detail that can make the difference between life and death in such situations.

The horrifying statistics show that more than 900 children have lost their lives in hot cars since 1998, Making Volvo’s new system a vital addition to every car’s safety apparatus. The carmaker says that the EX90 all-electric SUV will be the first model to operate the system, as a first step before integrating it in all models in the future.[i]

Volvo got its priorities straight by putting children's safety above all else.  Everyone should do the same in their private lives, what comes after our families? Our cars, of course!
