Walmart to Purchase 4,500 Canoo Electric Delivery Vehicles
In A major new step toward a carbon-free future, Walmart will purchase 4,500 Lifestyle Delivery Vehicle (LDV) from the EV startup Canoo.
The number of vehicles can go up to reach 10.000 units depending on Walmart’s future needs and the project’s success.
Walmart hopes to be a zero-emission company by 2040, and the new contract with Canoo is a major step toward realizing that goal. The LDV will be used mainly to make online deliveries starting in 2023. Meanwhile, the two companies still need to agree on the vehicle’s exact configuration to accommodate Walmart’s needs. The driving part will be covered by Walmart’s associates.
The vehicle itself is made by Canoo, the all-American commercial EV startup. The main advantage of the vehicle is the customization possibilities, as we saw a few days ago how it was transformed to accommodate NASA astronauts. Canoo says that the LDV is perfectly suitable for high-frequency stop-and-go deliveries and rapid vehicle-to-door drop-off for all kinds of commercial products in Walmart’s inventory.
David Guggina, senior vice president of innovation and automation, Walmart U.S. was very excited about this new deal with Canoo. He expressed that in a statement: "We're thrilled to continue diversifying our last mile delivery fleet with Canoo's unique and sustainably focused all-electric technology which will provide our associates with safe, ergonomic delivery vehicles,". "Today, the closest Walmart to customers is right in their pockets – it's the Walmart app. By continuing to expand our last mile delivery fleet in a sustainable way, we're able to provide customers and Walmart+ members with even more access to same-day deliveries while keeping costs low."
