The ever-imposing Toyota Sequoia returns for the 2024 model year, and according to Toyota, these are the main updates.

If you’re in a hurry, here is a summary of what to expect:

  • The Limited grade is the only trim to have the Nightshade Package.
  • The TRD Off-Road Package was extended to the Platinum grade AWD version.
  • The Standard Hybrid i-FORCE MAX now offers 437 hp and 583 lb.-ft. of torque.
  • The towing capacity has been increased to 9,520 lbs.
  • It will be manufactured at the Toyota plant in San Antonio, Texas.

Now, let’s dive into the details:

The 2024 model represents the third generation of the Toyota Sequoia, a model that has always strived to live up to its namesake. An imposing body, power, stability, and elegance are what the Sequoia redwood trees represent, so let's check if the car mirrors all of those attributes.

Let's first examine the new customization packages. For the exterior design, customers who don't want an SUV with a full body color can now choose the Nightshade Package, which features strategically placed black accents, such as on the 20-inch wheels, over fenders, grille, mirror caps, and badges.

Speaking of car paint, the Sequoia is now available in a new Terra color scheme, only offered on the TRD PRO trim. The new elegant Nightshade Package is also limited; it’s only available on the Limited trim level, currently priced at $67,275.

Performance-wise, Toyota is now offering its customers a new TRD Off-Road Package.

What does it do?

As its name suggests, the package is designed specifically to accommodate passengers when off-roading, adding an extra layer of comfort and adjusting the car’s performance for off-road requirements.

How much horsepower does a 2024 Toyota Sequoia engine have?

Now, before getting inside the 2024 Sequoia, let’s open up the hood and see what’s in there.

For the first time in this article, all the 2024 Sequoia’s trim levels will agree on something—they will all adopt the twin-turbo V6 hybrid i-FORCE MAX powertrain, producing a whopping 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft. of torque. The details of the individual power outputs of the electric motor and the engine were not mentioned. But if the name sounds familiar, you’re right; it’s the same powertrain currently used in the Tundra.

Power transfer is ensured by a standard 10-speed automatic transmission. All the 2WD Sequoias now feature part-time AWD, which is activated by the push of a button when facing some critical off-road situations. However, the TRD Pro trim doesn't need that because it comes standard with AWD.

Is the Sequoia a true off-roader?

When thinking of off-road car models, we instinctively picture a boxy, muscular car. But looks can be deceiving. Under the fancy skin, Toyota built the Sequoia around a robust chassis, inspired by that of the Tundra, offering enhanced handling and comfort.

To complement the excellent bodywork, Toyota engineers opted for an independent front suspension and a modern multi-link suspension in the rear. Designed to accommodate the increased towing capacity of 9,520 pounds, about 22% more than the previous generation. For enhanced control, the steering system now features a new rack-mounted electronic power steering system.

How large is the Toyota Sequoia?

Right off the bat, the Sequoia is a three-row SUV, a true family vehicle. Considering this fact, you perhaps need to start thinking about some suitable custom three-row seat covers to mitigate the damages incurred by frequent use and rowdy kids.

The storage situation on the Sequoia is impressive. Other than the familiar adjustable seating on the first and second rows, the third row offers the most practical features. The seats can be completely folded to the floor to accommodate large cargo. But in case you still want to have that third row, you can simply slide it forward by up to 6 inches, which is a great way to extend the storage area without sacrificing passenger capacity.

The adjustable storage space risks damaging a surface that is usually protected under the seats, and a universal cargo liner can never protect a variable storage space. What you need in this situation is a custom-made Cargo Liner designed specifically for your vehicle and capable of resisting abrasion, wear, and tear, and a host of other risks.

Does Toyota Sequoia have eco mode?

Driver assistance is one of the main features of the 2024 Sequoia. First, the car offers multiple drive modes suitable for various driving situations. This includes standard settings like Eco, Normal, and Sport. The car also offers a Tow Tech Package designed to make towing easier, a skill that few drivers could fully master. The package includes a Backup Guide and Straight Path Assist to ensure the towed trailer remains straight when backing up in a straight line.

Toyota equipped the Sequoia with a host of cameras, aiming to maximize situational awareness and eliminate blind spots around the car. The camera set includes a top-down view of the vehicle and its surroundings, a rear view of the trailer, and a hitch view to make trailer connecting a lot easier. The driver can seamlessly switch between various view modes on their 14-inch screen.

How big is the screen on the 2024 Sequoia?

Once again, on the entertainment level, the Sequoia SUV is following in the footsteps of the Tundra, offering the same standard 8-inch or optional 14-inch touchscreen.

Remember to decide on your preferred screen resolution before committing to any dash cover. It is critical to choose a custom-made dash cover, designed specifically for your dashboard and capable of keeping it safe from UV rays and dust without hindering any of its functions.

The infotainment system is called "Drive Connect." It controls temperature, directions, saved POIs (points of interest), audio control, and other minor features. The system can be voice-activated through the phrase "Hey Toyota." Drive Connect is compatible with both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto, and it offers real-time over-the-air updates, especially for mapping and Points of Interest (POI).

Is the 2024 Toyota Sequoia reliable?

Aside from the entertainment system, the SUV is also equipped with the Safety Connect and Service Connect systems. Safety Connect can ensure 24/7 automatic collision notification as well as a stolen vehicle locator. While Service Connect is designed to make maintenance more accessible, it constantly monitors the car and diagnoses its various systems, connecting the driver with nearby Toyota service centers when necessary.

The list of safety features on the Sequoia doesn't stop here. Toyota equips all trim levels with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, an active safety system designed to monitor nearby hazards, whether they are other vehicles or pedestrians, and alert the driver if danger is imminent.

Toyota Safety Sense is not a novel safety system, but contrary to previous generations, it can also detect pedestrians in low light and bicyclists in the daytime, as well as monitor vehicle and pedestrian movements at intersections when making left turns.

The system provides audio and visual alerts and can activate automatic braking when necessary. If braking poses a hazard to the car and the driver, the system can perform emergency steering maneuvers.

All in all, the Sequoia is perhaps the ideal family car, especially for those who love taking road trips. It offers enough engine power, plenty of space, a convenient trailing apparatus, and a set of robust safety features.
